A few people have asked how I started this sustainable lifestyle journey, and in all honesty – I have a long way to go. It is kind of never ending, as we are all learning on the way. Some people change their diet; some buying habits and some reduce their transport usage by walking or biking or even taking fewer holidays. There is no ‘one size fits all’ and I feel ANY change no matter how small should be admired.
It’s easy to be hard on yourself, but celebrate those small wins!
Start small, change one thing i.e. bamboo loo roll, and then once that is habit try something else. Just change one or two things to begin – and soon it will just become ingrained in daily life. Small steps in my eyes are pretty powerful.
Once you get used to a few of the smaller habits, take a look around your house/room and see what you can change next. Maybe much of your food shop is wrapped in plastic. Make a challenge to see how much of your food shop you can buy plastic free! I actually did this the other day and it made walking around the food shop far more interesting… (Ha!)
OR perhaps you could go room by room. I have started with the bathroom, made easy swaps like bamboo toothbrushes and loo roll then soap hair care and now onto the final one – safety razor! To think all the plastic I have ever bought still exists somewhere is a little scary, so anytime I want the convenient or easier choice; I think to myself… do I want this to end up in the sea potentially harming wildlife? And I surely do not.
My point is… there is no perfect time to start a sustainable lifestyle – we all have a carbon footprint no matter what we do, but we can minimize it by making better choices. I choose to travel, though I know it comes with a big carbon footprint so when I book my next flight, I will be offsetting it. This isn’t perfect but its something.
One of my favourite quotes: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” – Anne Marie Bonneau
I would love to hear how you started your sustainability journey?
